Description
Desi Ghee is pure Gir Cow ghee derived from the milk of organic grass-fed Gir cows. Ayurveda considers cow ghee a healthy fat. Desi ghee is traditionally valued for digestion, nasal comfort, and is rich in antioxidants — traditionally believed to help balance vata, pitta and kapha in the body naturally. Suitable for children, and traditionally associated with supporting memory. Ghee also has a high smoke point, making it a good choice for deep-frying and stir-frying.
What Is Ghee?
Ghee, in simple words, is clarified butter. Ghee (or clarified butter) is butter that has been cooked to remove milk solids and water — pure butterfat, or milk fat. Because the milk has been removed, it doesn't require refrigeration and stays fresh for months. Cow ghee has been used in India and other Asian countries for thousands of years as a nutritional staple and in traditional wellness practices.
Once the milk solids have separated, the butter is simmered until all the moisture evaporates and the milk solids brown slightly, giving ghee its signature browned, nutty, caramel-like taste and aroma. Ghee has a longer shelf life than butter and a higher smoke point (around 375°F), making it ideal for sautéing and searing. It can be refrigerated for 6 months or frozen for a year.
Desi Ghee is pure Gir Cow ghee derived from the milk of organic grass-fed Gir cows — a superior form of butter. Because milk solids are removed, ghee may also be more suitable for those with dairy sensitivities.
Why Desi Cow Ghee?
Pure desi cow ghee (A2 grade) contains primarily short-chain fatty acids (around 89%), as opposed to the longer-chain fatty acids more associated with blood clotting and thrombosis. Some lab studies have explored pure ghee's effects on cholesterol in the serum and intestine.
Gir cow ghee is considered one of the more easily digestible fats, and is traditionally associated with supporting gut comfort, immunity, and kidney and brain health.
Benefits
Digestion: Desi ghee is one of the more easily digestible dairy fats and may help support regular digestion. The ghee contains butyric acid, which nourishes the cells of the intestines and may help support a healthy digestive system.
Weight Management: Butyric acid may help support metabolism as part of an overall weight management routine.
Immune Support: Full of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K, desi ghee may help support a healthy immune system. These vitamins play a role in supporting heart, brain, and bone health.
Digestive Comfort: Desi Gir Cow ghee contains butyrate, a compound some research has studied in relation to digestive comfort.
Suitable for Lactose or Casein Sensitivity: Since ghee is made by removing milk solids, it generally does not contain the milk solids or other components found in other dairy products, which may make it more suitable for those with lactose or casein sensitivities. If you have a diagnosed intolerance, consult your doctor before adding it to your diet.
Higher Smoke Point for Cooking: Ghee has a high smoke point, which many dietitians note is beneficial for frying and high-heat cooking, since oils that break down at high temperatures can release free radicals. Desi Ghee's smoke point is notably higher than that of ordinary butter.
Skin Comfort: Ghee has traditionally been used as a natural moisturizer for dry skin, and traditionally applied to dry or chapped lips. It's traditionally used as a soothing application for minor skin dryness and irritation.
Heart Health Support: Vitamin K2 found in desi ghee is associated with supporting healthy calcium metabolism. It may help support a healthy balance between HDL ("good") and LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
Eye Comfort: Ghee is traditionally used in small amounts around the eyes for general comfort and moisturizing.
