Castor oil is tasteless and odorless oil, scientifically known as Ricinus Communis. It has been used as a medicine against almost all ailments in children and the elderly. These range from cough, cold, and fever, to constipation, indigestion, ingestion of any poisonous material, tapeworms and roundworms, skin diseases, and a number of others. Since stomach is the root cause of generally many health problems, so, whenever we have a health problem, we must thoroughly cleanse our digestive system and the problem would disappear. All the medicinal uses it has are mostly due to its germicidal, toxic, purgative, and disinfectant properties.

Health benefits of castor oil:

Boosts blood circulation: Immunity and proper blood flow go hand in hand. If your lymphatic system does not work, you will become chronically ill. The circulatory system is crucial to keep us alive by bringing oxygen to our cells. Castor oil has been shown to help in blood flow.

Treats Rheumatism and Arthritis: The ricinoleic, oleic, and linoleic and other fatty acids found in castor oil are very effective in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. They easily penetrate through the skin. Castor oil is mixed with other medicines for rheumatism to facilitate their penetration and enhance their effects. Other Benefits: Used as an effective purgative, ricinoleic acid in castor oil is anti-inflammatory by nature. Castor oil is also used in medication for HIV positive patients, as compounds like ricinoleic acid and ricin have germicidal and antiviral effects. Castor oil is also used on burns and wounds to protect them from infections.

Constipation: Castor oil is used to treat constipation. It may also be used to clean out the intestines before a bowel examination/surgery. Castor oil is known as a stimulant laxative. It works by increasing the movement of the intestines, helping the stool to come out.

Soothes Dry Skin and removes blackheads:Castor oil helps in relieving dry and patchy skin. If you are troubled with a scaly underfoot, especially during winters, castor oil can be applied along with crushed kapur which helps in deep exfoliation and softens the skin of the sole of the foot, advices Dr. DeepaliFor people with severely dry skin or dry hair, castor oil can be used once a week, but remember that no treatment should be done excessively. Castor oil is also beneficial for those suffering with a skin ailment called Atopic Dermatitis. It is a dry skin disease and is on a rise due to the climate change and increasing pollution. Applying castor oil on the whole body can help in keeping it nourished. Castor oil has a low comedogenic score, which means it is unlikely to clog pores in the skin, making it appropriate for use on sensitive skin with a low risk of developing blackheadsVishal Bhandari, Founder of Soul Tree adds, "Castor oil acts as a natural humectant locking moisture in the skin specially during the winter season and shields  your skin and hair from dust and dry heat."

Treats Wrinkles: Another piece of advice that William’s book offers is that castor oil can be a great natural remedy for wrinkles. It penetrates into the skin and boosts the production of collagen which softens and hydrates the skin. It rejuvenates the skin by making it softer and smoother. Apply a small amount of castor oil over the wrinkled area and leave it overnight.

Prevents Hair Fall: “You can apply castor oil once a week mixed with methi seed powder and use it as a hair mask along with steam. This prevents hair fall and also makes the roots stronger,” suggests Dr. Deepali.

To induce labour: A lot of pregnant women at full term are orally given castor oil, as it induces labour by pushing uterus contraction, according to gynaecologists. The ricinoleic acid in the oil activates EP3 prostanoid receptor in uterus, thus helping in delivery. However, it is not recommended in a lot of cases, as it makes the woman feel nauseous.

Relieves Menstrual Disorders: Ricinoleic acid, present in castor oil, is an emmenagogue by nature and stimulates menstruation in cases of delayed, painful, or obstructed menses. It also helps to relieve pain during menstruation.

To get rid of moles and cysts: Applying castor oil with a pinch of baking soda on the infected area is known to give the desired result. In fact, topical application of castor oil also solves the problem of cysts and corns by dissolving them. It is also said that castor oil helps dissolve cysts in the ovary as the fatty acid in castor oil is easily absorbed by the skin.

Acne: The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil make it useful in reducing acne. The ricinoleic acid produced by castor oil can inhibit the growth of bacteria that causes acne.
